William O. Matte

SOUTHBRIDGE – William O. Matte, lovingly known as Bill, passed away at the age of 80 on September 18, 2026, at Harrington Memorial Hospital in Southbridge. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Bill was the cherished son of the late Hubert and Ellen (Owen) Matte.

Bill was a graduate of Southbridge High School, Class of 1964. Following high school, he attended Boston University before answering the call to serve his country and enlisting in the United States Marine Corps.

He proudly served his country as a Marine during the Vietnam War, specializing in Chemical Warfare, and was honored with three Purple Hearts for his bravery and dedication.

After his military service, Bill became a beloved mail carrier in Paxton, serving the community for 35 years.

Bill was the devoted husband of Cynthia Matte, with whom he shared 56 beautiful years of marriage. He was a loving father to his son, Michael Matte, and daughter-in-law, Shana Matte. He was a proud and loving grandfather to his two grandchildren, Nicholas Matte and Megan Matte. His sister, Marjorie Rockwood, also survives him.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Matte.

Known for wearing his Marine insignia with pride, Bill’s strength and spirit touched all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, October 2, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Belanger-Bullard Funeral Home, 51 Marcy Street, Southbridge, Massachusetts.
