STURBRIDGE - Rita (Martel) Lofgren, 96, formerly of Sturbridge, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 3, at Christopher House in Worcester.
Born in Ludlow to Leonide and Meriza (Duquette) Martel, Rita was a devoted wife to her late husband, Carl Lofgren, who passed away on April 14, 2020. Together, they founded the Whistling Swan Restaurant in Sturbridge, where Rita served as general manager for 21 years. She took great pride in personally designing the restaurant’s interior, including the distinctive sunken bar and overall décor, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for many.
Rita is survived by her loving daughters, Karen Lofgren of Mashpee, Leslie Lofgren of Worcester, and Kim Lofgren of Sturbridge; her sister, Yvette Peloquin of Worcester; two grandchildren, Heather Mojer-Harrison of Salem and Leah Mojer of Nantucket; and two great-grandchildren, Louis Harrison and Sterling Harrison. She was preceded in death by her brother, Bernard Martel, and her sister, Lorraine Peloquin.
Rita enjoyed traveling throughout Europe, dining out, trips to the casino, and spending winters in Sanibel, Florida. Her warmth and dedication touched the lives of all who knew her.
A funeral service for Rita will be held on Monday, June 8, at the Belanger-Bullard Funeral Home, 51 Marcy Street, Southbridge. Burial will follow at 3:00 PM at the Massachusetts Veterans Cemetery on Main Street in Agawam.
An online guestbook and video tribute are available at www.BelangerFuneralHome.com for those who wish to share memories and condolences.
