Phyllis Newman

December 12, 1932 — September 2, 2021

STURBRIDGE: Phyllis A. (Rowan) Newman, 88, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 2, 2021. She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward J. Newman and sister, Ilene Rowan. She is survived by her daughters, Diane E. Coleman of Framingham, MA, Joanne L. & Alan K. Jones of Brookfield, MA; her adoring grandchildren, Lindsay A. Jones & fiancé Bryan M. Wallace of Keene, NH, Allison M. Jones of Seattle, WA, and William A. Jones of Brookfield, MA; extended family and large community of friends. Phyllis was born in Framingham, daughter of the late Edward J. & Hazel I. (Goddard) Rowan. She graduated from Framingham High School. Phyllis worked for New England Telephone (now Verizon) for 37 years starting as a patch cord operator in Wellesley, MA. Phyllis served as president of the Telephone Pioneers regional chapter. She was a devoted member of Saint Anne and Saint Patrick Parish in Sturbridge, MA. Phyllis volunteered for the Special Olympics and Boston Marathon for many years. She also dedicated her time as the first Queen Mother in the Red Hats “Young at Heart” organization at the Sturbridge Retirement Cooperative Corporation (SRCC) and served as an active member on the SRCC Board of Directors for many years. Phyllis loved her family unconditionally and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and attending all their events growing up. Phyllis was an avid reader and enjoyed cross stitching, knitting, and cooking. Christmas was her favorite holiday. Phyllis enjoyed traveling, especially organizing bus trips and beach days with family and friends. She took a memorable trip to Ireland with her family in 2012. Phyllis’s memorial and service will be held on Saturday September 11^th from10-11AM followed by a mass at 11AM, at Belanger-Bullard Funeral Home, 51 Marcy St, Southbridge, MA 01550.
