CHARLTON – It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Paula Mateo, 98, a beloved matriarch, who departed this life peacefully at her home on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at the remarkable age of 98. Born in Barrinca, Puerto Rico, Paula’s journey led her to become a cherished resident of Southbridge Road, where she touched the lives of many with her warmth and love.
Paula was the proud mother of Anibal Rivas of Charlton, Angel Rivas of Southbridge, Jr. Rivas of Worcester, Hector Rivas of Puerto Rico, Margarita Rivas of Springfield, Carman T. Rivas of Dudley, Olga Rivas of Puerto Rico, Mineba Rivas of Puerto Rico, Aida Rivas of Worcester, Maria Rivas of Southbridge, and Elba Rivas of Puerto Rico. She leaves behind a legacy of love reflected in her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Paula was predeceased by two of her beloved children, Carmen Rivas and Manuel Rivas.
A devoted member of St. John Paul II Parish in Southbridge, Paula was known for her welcoming spirit, particularly exemplified through her love for cooking. Family gatherings were always enhanced by her delicious meals, and no visit would be complete without enjoying a freshly brewed cup of her famous coffee.
Paula's calling hours will be held from 5 PM to 7 PM on Friday, December 19, at the Belanger-Bullard Funeral Home, 51 Marcy St., Southbridge.
Her funeral Mass and burial will take place in Orocovis, Puerto Rico, honoring her roots and the life she cherished dearly.
