WESTMINSTER/CHARLTON: Marie M. (Stark) Kauppinen, 92, of Westminster, and most recently at the Charlton Manor Rest Home; died Saturday, February 16 at Harrington Hospital. Marie leaves a son, John Kauppinen of Charlton; a daughter, Christine Kauppinen of Kahului, HI; three grandsons Eric, Kurt and Scott Kauppinen of Charlton whom she cherished; and four nieces and nephews, Paula Stark and Holly Stark of Montclair, NJ, Alan Stark of Northborough and Robert Small Jr. of Belmont. Her husband of 39 years, John Weikko Kauppinen, died in 1988. She was also predeceased by her sisters Grace Small of Belmont, Alberta Stark of Boston; and her brother, Al Stark of Gilford, NH and St. Petersburg, FL. Marie was born in Boston, son of Jack and Mary (Rugenus) Stark, grew up in Worcester and lived in Westminster for over 60 years, until late last year. She worked in Worcester at the Shervey Photography Studio and Norton Company during the WWII, and graduated Salter Secretarial School in Worcester. After marriage, Marie moved to Westminster and worked at a bank and General Electric in Fitchburg. She was very family-oriented and was a homemaker until both of her children grew up; and then worked part-time at the Aubuchon Hardware central office, R.H. Whites clothing store, and the Piece Goods fabric store. Marie enjoyed and was very talented with making all types of crafts, especially needlepoint. In her younger years, she also enjoyed singing, walking, and was an avid reader. She and her late husband loved getting together with her brother, sisters and their families during the holidays and for a summer gathering; and they especially liked travelling to different swimming beaches, and going to Cape Cod every summer. After her husband’s passing, she loved spending time with her son John, his wife Martha, and their children; and loved getting together with her daughter Christine, including making journeys to Hawaii every other year to vacation and visit, her last when she was over 80 years old. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made in her name to the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, 34 Washington St., Suite 200, Wellesley Hills, MA 02481; or to the Westminster Council of Aging, PO BOX 212, Westminster, MA 01473.
