Lee Weston Hartman

CHARLTON: Lee Weston Hartman, 77, of Masonic Home Road, died March 24, 2023, after a short illness.
He leaves his wife of 54 years, Rose (Sandrick) Hartman; daughter, Danielle Bennett of So. Windsor, CT, her husband Brett, and their daughter, Linnea; and daughter, Jennifer Hartman of Lexington, MA, her husband David Marble, and their son, Rowan. He also leaves his niece Sandy Collins and nephew Darryl Hartman and their families. He was predeceased by his older brother Don and his wife Noreen.
Lee was born in June 1945 in Detroit, Michigan to Zeeland and Maxine (Hinton) Hartman. Both of his parents and his older brother were deaf and the family was closely connected to the local deaf community. As the only hearing member of the household, Lee took on many responsibilities at an early age and was very close to his grandparents, Gladys and Ora Hinton, who were deeply involved in his early upbringing. He spent summers enjoying weeks up at their lake cabin and on his Aunt Ursel and Uncle Ami's farm in Indiana. He grew up especially close with his cousin, Rick Hinton.
Lee graduated from Wilbur Wright High School in Detroit and though he never got a college degree, within a short time he became the youngest underwriter at the Aetna, beginning his career in the insurance industry. He met Rose as they sat at nearby desks after she started at the company. They became friends first and later began dating. His career was interrupted for 18 months after he was drafted into the US Army to serve in Vietnam. He and Rose married while he was on leave in 1968.
Once Lee finished his tour, he and Rose settled in Southfield, MI, and had their oldest daughter. While on a training trip to Connecticut, Lee explored the surrounding countryside and fell in love with New England and decided to move his new family there. He got a job in Hartford, CT, they moved to Enfield, CT, and soon had their second daughter. He worked hard and continued his training, moving up the ranks until he was managing a team of over twenty. He loved the move to management roles as his favorite part of any job was working with people.
Lee was a loving, humorous, and devoted husband, father, and friend. Having converted from Baptist to her own Byzantine Catholic faith before marrying Rose, he was deeply involved in their local Catholic church, Marriage Encounter groups, and later took up golf and running. He was always up for a game of cards, a dinner party or some backyard grilling. After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis which affected his short term memory, he retired from a high profile, independent insurance agency in his mid 40’s.
Even in retirement, Lee continued to live in ways that let him be social - working as a hospital chaplaincy volunteer, spending over ten years as an interpreter at Old Sturbridge Village, and meeting new people while traveling as often as possible with Rose - especially to Key West, Cancun, and anywhere with a great beach. They lived on Cape Cod before settling in central Massachusetts, to Millbury and then to Charlton. He continued to love meeting new people - chatting over a good meal or playing some pool. And from their new location, he could easily visit either of their children, and then grandchildren. He became a warm and loving grandfather, ready with a story or a good (bad) pun. He will be dearly missed.
His funeral Mass will be held at Noon on Friday, March 31, in St. Joseph Church, 10 H. Putnam Rd. extension, Charlton, MA.
Burial with Military Honors will follow in FT. Devens Post Cemetery, 33 Patton RD. Devens, MA
