Jonathan Swain

February 8, 1934 — December 15, 2014

Lt. Col. Jonathan Folger "Bing" Swain, peacefully passed away Monday, December 15, 2014 in Charlton, MA at the age of 80. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Madeline "Dutch" Barbara (Ricker), two daughters; Jennifer of Los Altos, CA and Suzanne of Winchester, MA, three grandchildren; Mark, Lexie and Juliana all of Winchester, MA and ten nieces and nephews. His brother, Richard Francis Chase Swain, predeceased him.


Born February 8, 1934 the son of Don Day Swain and Louise Holly (Thomas), Bing was raised in Worcester and summered in Nantucket, where he would meet his wife, Dutch. He was a graduate of Tabor Academy and a postgraduate student at The Oundle School in England and received a B.A. degree from Princeton University and M.B.A degree from The Wharton School.  In 1972, he started Executive Training Corporation, a management consulting business that he ran successfully for 15 years and resided in Sudbury for 44 years with his wife, where they raised their two daughters. He was on Active Duty in the Marine Corps from 1957-1959 and then retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 26 years in the Marine Corps Reserves. He was a successful fundraiser for Tabor Academy, Oundle School, Wheaton College and the US Marine Corps, served as Chairman or Trustee of many Committees, Boards, Programs and Clubs, and was an active member serving volunteer organizations such as Toys for Tots and local food pantries. He was a member of American Mensa, Wharf Rat Club on Nantucket and enjoyed jogging, woodworking, reading and discussing subjects of substance.

Memorial Services will be held at Overlook Life Care Community Chapel, Nicoll Chapel, 88 Masonic Home Rd, Charlton, MA 01507, on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 11 AM and at Sudbury United Methodist Church, 251 Old Sudbury Road, Sudbury, MA 01776 on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at 11AM. Reception to follow each service. All are welcome. 

Memorial donations may be made in Bing's name to Toys for Tots Foundation, 18251 Quantico Gateway Drive, Triangle, VA 22172 or Tabor Academy, 66 Spring St., Marion, MA 02738. 

DIRECTIONS and PARKING for Memorial Service at Overlook Masonic Home: Turn into 88 Masonic Home Road by main entrance sign that says Overlook Life Care Community. Take an immediate right at the next sign, following the arrow toward Nicoll Chapel and the red and yellow balloons. The entrance to Nicoll Chapel is at the first columned portico on the left, at the sign that says Overlook Masonic Health Center. Parking is available in the lot that runs along the Health Center.
