Dolores Doherty

WARREN – Dolores M. (Ouimette) Doherty, 86, of Bacon St. and owner of the Doherty Funeral Home, died Monday, March 8, at Wingate at Wilbraham Nursing Home, after an illness. She was the wife of the late Phillip Doherty who died in 1988.  She was also predeceased by her son, Phillip Doherty Jr., who died in 1998, and two sisters, Constance Aldrich and Rita “Billie” Culliton.  She leaves several nieces and nephews including Faith Dulak, of Ware.

Mrs. Doherty was born on May 17, 1923, in Ware, the daughter of the late Edward and Leah (Legare) Ouimette, and lived in the area her entire life.  She graduated from Ware High School, and continued her education in nursing.  She graduated from Mercy Hospital Nursing School as a Registered Nurse, and worked as a nurse for 50 years.  While working as a nurse, she met and married her husband, Phil, and together, they established the Doherty Funeral Home.  After the death of her husband and son, Mrs. Doherty continued to operate the funeral home.  She attended the Funeral Institute of the Northeast, in Norwood, and received her diploma for the funeral directors widow’s program.  She graduated in 2002, at the age of 78, and was the oldest funeral service student to have graduated from the institute.

She was a member of St. Paul’s parish.

Mrs. Doherty enjoyed swimming, going out with her friends and taking care of her dog, Chief.

Her funeral Mass will be held at 10:30AM, Saturday, March 13, in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 42 North St., West Warren.  A calling hour will be held, prior to Mass, from 9:00AM – 10:00AM, in the Doherty Funeral Home, 40 Bacon St., Warren.  Spring burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Warren.
